In 1990, while Portugal was confidently adjusting to its integration in the European Union, the results of a questionnaire about Europe completed by Grade 12 students from six different schools revealed
great optimism about the European Union and its future. In 1996, Grade 10 students who had studied the new 7th grade programme on Europe completed the same questionnaire. In a context of public discontent,
young people werefound to have betterknowledge of theterritory ofthe continent but identified lesswiththe European project despite the explicit objectives ofthenew geography programmes.
