In England and Wales there is a statutory National Curriculum which includes geography for ages 516. In addition to the programmes of study prescribed for geography, the proposed revision of the
curriculum (Curriculum 2000) includes common requirements for all subject areasto develop communication skills with an emphasis on oracy, reading and writing. This should be seen in light of the British
government's commitment to raising standards of literacy by 2002 (Literacy Task Force, 1997: 7), making the development of literacy an area of critical concern to all teachers. The challenge for geographers
is to show how their subject can contribute to children's literacy development. This paper reports on part of a study carried out with Year 5 children (aged 910 years) in a suburban school in South
Wales.
