Intelligibility in English: Of What Relevance Today to Intercultural Communication?

This paper reviews the construct of speech intelligibility as expounded by Cathford half a century ago in a landmark treatise, and in the collaborative efforts of Smith, Nelson and Rafiqzad to examine its
relevance to intercultural communication in a new millenium beset by the contradictory global tensions of homogeneity and fragmentation. As Graddol and others note, these forces of globalisation have rendered
the notion of a homogeneity of forms and patterns of communication in English almost defunct in the epicentres of 'pluricentric' Englishes. The paper argues that speech intelligibility as a construct has
to be re-examined in relation to the forces of globalisation that push towards intercultural communication in these sites of world, new or multiple Englishes by presenting evidence from the localised and
the globalised workplace that demonstrates this phenomenon.
Kertas ini mengulas konstruksi kemudah-fahaman pertuturan yang dihuraikan oleh Cathford dalam karya agungnya 50 dekad yang lalu, serta hasil
usaha-sama Smith, Nelson dan Rafiqzad untuk menilai hubung kaitnya dengan komunikasi antar-budaya dalam alaf baru yang dibayangi percanggahan ketegangan global kehomogenan dan perpecahan. Seperti yang dinyatakan
oleh Graddol dan lain-lain, kuasa-kuasa globalisasi ini telah mengakibatkan anggapan bahawa kehomogenan dari segi bentuk dan corak komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggeris hampir pupus di tengah-tengah bahasa-bahasa
Inggeris 'pluricentric'. Kertas ini membahaskan bahawa konstruksi kemudah-fahaman pertuturan harus dikaji semula dari segi kuasa- kuasa globalisasi yang cenderung kepada komunikasi antar-budaya di bahagian-bahagian
dunia ini, sama ada bahasa-bahasa Inggeris bentuk baru atau berbagai dengan membentangkan bukti-bukti dari organisasi kerja tempatan dan global yang mempamerkan fenomena ini.
